Why is this medication prescribed?
Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce the risk of a possible stroke. It may be used alone or in combination with other agents.
Losartan is in a class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists, that work by preventing the constriction (narrowing) of blood vessels (veins and arteries).
Losartan was the first angiotensin II receptor antagonist to be marketed. It is currently marketed by Merck & Co. under the name CozaarŪ.
